We Try the Best Lok Lok Stalls in Singapore - Reviews

    What is Lok Lok?

Lok Lok, derived from the Cantonese term meaning “dip dip,” is a beloved street food that has captured the hearts of many across Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. Its unique and interactive dining style, which involves dipping skewered food items into boiling broth or hot oil, makes it a fun and communal eating experience. To truly appreciate Lok Lok, it is essential to delve into its history, culinary roots, and the cultural significance it holds in the region.

    The History of Lok Lok

    194

The origins of Lok Lok can be traced back to the vibrant street food culture of Malaysia. The concept of skewered food cooked on the spot for customers is believed to have started in the bustling night markets of Kuala Lumpur and Penang. These markets, known for their eclectic mix of flavors and aromas, provided the perfect setting for the birth of Lok Lok.

Lok Lok's evolution was influenced by various factors, including the multicultural tapestry of Malaysia, which blends Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous cuisines. The practice of cooking skewered food likely drew inspiration from traditional Chinese hotpot and satay, an Indonesian and Malay dish of seasoned, skewered, and grilled meat served with peanut sauce. The combination of these culinary traditions gave rise to Lok Lok, a versatile and customizable street food.

The Culinary Roots of Lok Lok

Lok Lok is essentially an amalgamation of several culinary techniques and flavors. The concept revolves around skewers of various food items, which can include:

    • Meat Skewers: Marinated beef, chicken, pork, and lamb, often seasoned with a mix of herbs and spices to enhance their flavors.
    • Seafood Skewers: Fresh prawns, squid, fish balls, crab sticks, and other seafood delicacies that are either boiled or fried.
    • Vegetable Skewers: A variety of vegetables such as mushrooms, baby corn, broccoli, and bell peppers, providing a healthy and crunchy option.
    • Specialty Items: Unique offerings like quail eggs, tofu, dumplings, and cheese-filled skewers, catering to diverse tastes and preferences.

    Cooking Methods of Lok Lok

The cooking methods used in Lok Lok are integral to its appeal. The skewers can be cooked in two main ways:

    1. Boiling Broth: Skewers are dipped into a pot of simmering broth, which can be plain or infused with flavors like Tom Yum, Laksa, or herbal chicken. The broth not only cooks the food but also imparts its flavors, making each bite a flavorful experience.
    2. Deep-Frying: Some skewers are deep-fried to achieve a crispy and golden exterior. This method is particularly popular for items like prawn fritters, fish cakes, and other battered ingredients.

    Dipping Sauces for Lok Lok

No Lok Lok experience is complete without a variety of dipping sauces. These sauces are essential in elevating the flavors of the skewers and providing a customizable taste experience. Common dipping sauces include:

    • Spicy Chili Sauce: A fiery blend of chili, garlic, and vinegar, adding a spicy kick to the skewers.
    • Peanut Sauce: A sweet and nutty sauce made from ground peanuts, often enriched with coconut milk and spices.
    • Soy Sauce: A simple yet flavorful option, often mixed with garlic, ginger, and sesame oil.
    • Sate Sauce: A rich and savory sauce made from a combination of soy sauce, brown sugar, and various spices.
    • Garlic and Herb Sauce: A zesty and aromatic sauce that complements the fresh ingredients.

The Cultural Significance of Lok Lok

    193

Lok Lok is more than just a meal; it is a cultural experience that embodies the spirit of communal dining. The act of cooking and sharing food at the table fosters a sense of togetherness and camaraderie. In many ways, Lok Lok represents the social aspect of dining in Southeast Asian cultures, where food is often at the center of social gatherings and celebrations.

In Malaysia, Lok Lok stalls are a common sight at night markets and street corners, where they attract crowds of locals and tourists alike. The vibrant atmosphere, the sizzle of skewers on the grill, and the enticing aromas create an irresistible allure. In Singapore, Lok Lok has seamlessly integrated into the local food scene, with numerous stalls and restaurants offering their own take on this beloved street food.

Our Editor's Review on DLLM (Dinner Lok Lok Menu)

      Positive Points

      Affordable and Delicious

As a bargain hunter, I couldn't resist the allure of DLLM Lok Lok, where every skewer costs just S$1. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a variety of delicious skewers without breaking the bank. The wide selection includes everything from Taiwan sausages to smoked duck and deep-fried squid, all enhanced by their tangy and spicy chili padi and lime sauce. The experience is delightfully messy, but that’s part of the fun. Plus, DLLM Lok Lok stays open until 4 AM, making it an ideal choice for late-night cravings.

      Menu Highlights

During my visit, I indulged in a variety of skewers, including smoked duck, otah, and Taiwan sausage. One unique offering that stood out was their salted egg-flavored dip, which added a rich and savory twist to the skewers. Despite being busy, the wait time was reasonable, and the service was prompt.

I also tried the Ah Ma Mee with curry flavor, priced at $2.80. It was a comforting bowl of curry maggie mee with an egg, perfect for complementing the skewers. The fried beancurd skin was exceptionally crispy, and the pork stick was delicious. Even the simple potato slice was fantastic.

      Variety and Flavors

DLLM Lok Lok offers an impressive variety of skewers and dipping sauces. My favorites included the mala chicken, potato chips, and mushrooms. Although the curry Ah Ma noodles weren't my top pick, the generous portion with an egg made it a worthwhile choice. The deep-fried Lok Lok pairs wonderfully with their chili sauce and a pint of beer, making it a great spot for a casual hangout.

      DLLM (Dinner Lok Lok Menu)

      Ambiance and Experience

Located in an industrial park canteen, DLLM Lok Lok is a bit off the beaten path, but the journey is worth it. The open, windy environment with free techno music adds to the casual, laid-back vibe. The combination of delicious food, affordable prices, and a lively atmosphere makes it a popular supper spot.

One special feature of DLLM Lok Lok is the salted egg yolk sauce, which is absolutely delicious. The maggi noodles, served with a whole pack of noodles, egg, and fried garlic, go surprisingly well with the fried items. While the Tom Yam version was a bit diluted for my taste, the original maggi curry version was delightful.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

      First Impressions

DLLM Lok Lok, nestled in an industrial estate, seemed like an ideal spot for a casual supper with friends and a cold beer. However, my experience was a mixed bag. The location, being quite remote, is not somewhere I would typically venture out to, especially considering the overall quality of the food and service.

      Food Quality and Selection

The food selection at DLLM Lok Lok offers a wide variety of skewers, but unfortunately, the quality was hit or miss. The broccoli, enoki mushroom, and oyster mushroom were decent, but other items fell short of expectations. The mantou was slightly charred, and the cheesy sausage had an odd powdery texture. The curry maggi noodles tasted just like instant cup noodles, lacking any unique flavor.

      Service and Cleanliness

Service at DLLM Lok Lok was average, with staff being polite but overwhelmed by the sheer volume of orders. My visit around 10 PM revealed that the drink stall was closed, leaving only a few canned drinks and mineral water available. Additionally, the tables and chairs were mostly oily and dirty, which detracted from the dining experience.

      Waiting Time

One of the most significant drawbacks was the excessive wait time. Arriving at 11:30 PM, I had to wait over an hour for my food. Despite there being no visible queue, the online food order queue was massive, and it was clear the kitchen couldn't keep up. The wait time of 1 hour and 15 minutes was unreasonable, with no clear updates provided during this period.

      Sauces and Flavor

The variety of sauces was limited, with only a saucer of salted egg and satay sauce provided. The flavors were too sweet for my liking, and the overall quality of the food did not justify the long wait. Although the prices were affordable, the taste did not make up for the extended waiting time.

      Final Thoughts

While DLLM Lok Lok has potential with its wide variety of skewers and affordable prices, the overall experience left much to be desired. The long wait times, mediocre food quality, and lack of cleanliness are significant issues that need addressing. Despite being less crowded after 10:40 PM, the quality and taste were not compelling enough to make me want to return. For now, I would suggest exploring other Lok Lok spots in Singapore that offer better service and food quality.

        First Impressions

I recently visited See See Lok Lok, a popular spot for Lok Lok enthusiasts offering an impressive 35 different varieties of “loksticks” priced at S$1 each. They even run a promotion where you can get 58 loksticks for just S$50, which is a fantastic deal for those looking to indulge.

On weekends, See See Lok Lok steps it up with premium sticks like baby abalone, premium scallops, and salmon cubes available for S$1.50 each. This variety adds a touch of luxury to the typical Lok Lok experience, making it a must-visit during weekends.

        Sauce Selection

One of the highlights of See See Lok Lok is their selection of seven different sauces, catering to both spicy and non-spicy preferences. As a spice lover, I highly recommend trying the Thai Seafood Chili Sauce and the Homemade Chili Sauce. These sauces add a vibrant kick to the skewers, elevating the overall taste.

        Cooking Options

While you can have your Lok Lok skewers fried at no extra cost, there’s also an option to have them boiled in a hotpot for an additional S$8. Other Menu Offerings

See See Lok Lok isn't just about skewers. They also offer a variety of other dishes such as rice bowls (S$7.90), koka mee (S$6.90), and sides starting from S$5.90. I decided to try their ke kou mian, which turned out to be a delightful dish. Unlike the traditional Chinese version, this one was dry and reminiscent of Mee goreng. The springy noodles were cooked in a sweet black sauce and topped with a sunny-side-up egg, fried chicken chop, and caramelized broccoli. The chicken was crispy, lightly salted, and tender, making it a great supper option for just S$7.

        See See Lok Lok

        Ambiance and Experience

The ambiance at See See Lok Lok is lively, though it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. Finding a seat took a bit of time, but the vibrant atmosphere made up for it. The Flower Enoki was particularly addictive, seasoned well and perfectly crispy without being greasy.

        Beer Promotions

To complement your meal, See See Lok Lok offers some great beer promotions. You can get twin towers of beer for S$88 or enjoy two happy hour pints for S$18. These deals are available from Tuesday to Thursday, 3 PM to 7 PM, making it a perfect spot to unwind with friends after work.

        Conclusion

Overall, See See Lok Lok provides a fantastic Lok Lok experience with a wide range of skewers and delicious sauces. The weekend premium options and the ability to choose between frying and hotpot cooking methods add a unique touch. While the wait for seating can be a bit long, the food quality and variety make it worth the visit. Whether you’re a Lok Lok veteran or trying it for the first time, See See Lok Lok promises a satisfying and enjoyable dining experience.

Our Editor's Review on Malaysia Local Delights

          Positive Points

          First Impressions

Malaysian Local Delights is a hidden gem near the famous Ponggol Nasi Lemak in Tanjong Katong. Despite its modest exterior, this restaurant serves a delightful Malacca-style Lok Lok steamboat buffet along with a variety of authentic Malaysian dishes. The simple shopfront belies the culinary treasures inside.

          Ambiance and Service

The restaurant uses glass fridges to display its wide variety of skewered vegetables, assorted meats, and sliced abalone, ensuring the food stays fresh and free from flies. The newly renovated interior is welcoming, and the staff, including the friendly owner, provide excellent service. The ambiance is a bit warm, and you may leave with a BBQ smell on your clothes, but the overall experience is pleasant.

          Lok Lok Experience

Malaysian Local Delights specializes in Lok Lok, and the variety is impressive. Some standout skewers include scallop, beef, and cheesy sotong balls. The spicy Thai fishcake skewer also has a good texture and flavor. My favorite way to enjoy Lok Lok is by dipping the skewers into their thick, nutty satay sauce, which pairs perfectly with the meat skewers. The sauce adds an extraordinary flavor, making each bite a delight.

The restaurant offers three cooking styles: boiling, frying, and deep-frying. You can boil or grill the skewers yourself, while the kitchen handles the frying. This variety in cooking methods adds to the fun and interactive dining experience.

          Other Malaysian Dishes

In addition to Lok Lok, the ala carte Malaysian dishes are worth trying. We sampled the KL Hokkien Mee, Penang Fried Kway Teow, Dry Bak Kut Teh (BKT), Herbal Chicken, Muar Otak, and Braised Lobak. The KL Hokkien Mee had a nice smoky flavor, and the Otak was authentic and tasty. While the Fried Kway Teow lacked a bit of wok hei, it was still enjoyable. The Dry BKT and Herbal Chicken were average but satisfying.

          Malaysia Local Delights

          Buffet and Extras

The Lok Lok buffet is reasonably priced at $25-26 per person for a 2-hour session, including free flow of drinks, ice cream, coffee, and crackers. The variety of skewers is vast, with favorites like fried crab stick, sliced abalone, luncheon meat, enoki mushroom, cheese tofu, and satay. Occasionally, staff will serve additional fried items like seaweed chicken, nuggets, and chicken wings directly to your table.

          Conclusion

Malaysian Local Delights offers a satisfying and authentic Lok Lok experience with a wide variety of skewers and delicious sauces. The addition of traditional Malaysian dishes makes it a versatile dining spot. While the restaurant can get crowded, the attentive service and quality food make it worth the visit. Whether you're a Lok Lok aficionado or trying it for the first time, Malaysian Local Delights promises a memorable and enjoyable meal.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

          First Impressions

I recently visited Malaysian Local Delights with high expectations, drawn in by their reputation for serving rustic Malacca-style Lok Lok and other familiar Malaysian dishes. However, my experience left much to be desired.

          Disappointing Food Quality

The biggest letdown was the white beehoon, which lacked any flavor. While the Lok Lok itself was passable, other menu items did not meet expectations. My entire family felt uneasy after the meal, which was a significant concern.

          Service Experience

The service at Malaysian Local Delights was subpar. Despite it being a buffet hotpot, it felt like they were trying to control our food intake. For instance, although we handed our order slip to the staff, they claimed there were no pending orders. It was a frustrating experience, to say the least.

          Tips for a Better Experience

From my visit, I gathered a few tips that might help improve the experience:

          • Sit Inside: Those seated inside seemed to receive better service, including offerings of satays and other items.
          • Ask for Extras: Although ice cream and fruits are free-flow, they won’t inform you. Be sure to ask for them.

          Detailed Visit Timeline

Here’s a timeline of my experience at Malaysian Local Delights:

          • 7:30 PM: Arrived and ordered the soup base, which took 25 minutes to arrive.
          • 7:55 PM: Owner offered fried seaweed chicken and satay to share with the ground.
          • 8:00 PM: Ordered Lok Lok and waited 20 minutes for it to arrive.
          • 8:20 PM: Repeatedly ordered chili, which never came.
          • 8:30 PM: Ordered fried food; prawns were lost in the process and never came out.
          • 8:45 PM: Managed to get only two prawns in the two hours we were there.
          • 8:50 PM: Ordered pork belly; received less than ten tiny slices after multiple attempts.
          • 9:00 PM: Noticed that most staff were hiding in the kitchen, leaving one young helper to manage the floor.

          Final Thoughts

My overall experience at Malaysian Local Delights was disappointing. The cost was $26.80 per person, and for three people, it added up to $88. Despite the reasonable price for a buffet, the waiting game and poor service made it feel like a waste of money. While I understand the challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, the service and food quality need significant improvement. For now, I would recommend saving your money and considering other dining options.

Our Editor's Review on A.K. Zai Lok Lok

            Positive Points

            First Impressions

I recently visited A.K Zai Lok Lok for the first time with my colleagues. Although I frequently stop by the area to buy from the famous Tiong Bahru Pau & Snack, I had never noticed this Lok Lok restaurant before. The entrance of the restaurant was impressive, but upon entering, we found ourselves unattended. One of my colleagues had to walk in to find a staff member to confirm our reservation, which I understand might be due to the general shortage of manpower in the F&B industry.

            Service and Seating

Once we were shown to our seats, a staff member politely explained the charges and rules: S$19.90 per person for the buffet, plus S$3 for free flow drinks including barley, water chestnut, and sour plum. Additionally, the Mookata base cost S$10, with single and dual bases priced at S$10 and S$15, respectively. We opted for the Tom Yum and Pork Broth (Clear Soup).

            Food Quality and Variety

The variety of Lok Lok was decent, though some might find it lacking, with items like a single piece of crab stick or half a hotdog per stick. Despite this, I enjoyed the crab claw skewer. You have the option to either deep fry your skewers or dip them in the soup.

The deep-fried skewers were served quickly, but they came without any seasoning, which was a bit disappointing. I had hoped for the typical seasoned Lok Lok you find in Johor, Malaysia. Instead, we were provided with sachets of seasoning to DIY, which didn’t taste as good. However, the chili crab sauce for dipping was excellent.

            Dining Experience

The overall dining experience was pleasant. The environment was cozy, and the servers were friendly and welcoming. One of the highlights was the gentleman, presumably part of the management, who kindly helped us take a group photo outside the shop for a colleague's farewell dinner. Unfortunately, he informed us that it was their last week of operation at this location due to rising rental costs. They are searching for a new spot, possibly in Chinatown, and will update their Facebook page once they have secured a new location.

            A.K. Zai Lok Lok

            Tips and Recommendations

            • Parking: Park at the paid open space carpark opposite the restaurant.
            • Service: Better service is usually found inside the restaurant.
            • Food Tips: The deep-fried skewers can be oily and come without batter. The DIY seasoning may not be to everyone's taste, but the variety of sauces, especially the chili crab sauce, can enhance the flavors.
            • Additional Costs: The buffet is priced at S$19.90, with additional costs for soup bases and free flow drinks.

            Conclusion

A.K Zai Lok Lok offers a decent dining experience with a good variety of Lok Lok skewers and a pleasant atmosphere. While the food quality could be improved with better seasoning, the friendly service and cozy environment make it a nice spot for gatherings. Despite the challenges of rising rental costs, I hope they find a new location soon. If you enjoy Lok Lok and are looking for a chill hangout spot, A.K Zai Lok Lok is worth a visit.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

            First Impressions

My recent visit to A.K Zai Lok Lok was filled with anticipation, given its reputation. Opting for the S$19.90 buffet with an additional S$3 for unlimited drinks and S$10 for a small pot of Tom Yum soup, my colleagues and I were eager to dive into the Lok Lok experience. However, our visit quickly turned into a mixed bag of highs and lows.

            Buffet Experience

The Lok Lok buffet offers unlimited fried skewers, which can also be cooked in the Tom Yum soup. Unfortunately, the skewers lacked seasoning and came without even a hint of salt. We had to request sauces, and were only given small plates with limited quantities. Despite the 120-minute buffet limit, we were hurried out in just 45 minutes due to long queues outside. This rushed experience was disappointing, as we felt pressured to pay and vacate even though we hadn’t finished our food and drinks.

            Food Quality

The variety of Lok Lok skewers included basic items like mushrooms, sausages, fishballs, and crab sticks. The prawns, as noted in several reviews, were not fresh. The S$10 Tom Yum soup tasted like it came from a store-bought pack, with staff merely topping it up with hot water when it ran low. We tried four types of dipping sauces: mayonnaise, sweet chili, satay sauce, and chili crab sauce. Unfortunately, the sauces did not live up to the rave reviews.

            Service and Atmosphere

Service was a major letdown. While some staff were friendly and tried their best, the overall experience was marred by poor service. We had to wait a long time for our hotpot and fried food to be served or refilled. The Tom Yum soup base, recommended by the staff, was decent but required a long wait. One of the staff members was particularly unhelpful, which added to our frustration. Additionally, we weren’t informed about the 120-minute time limit starting from our booking time, leading to us being asked to leave just as our last round of food arrived.

            Recommendations

Despite the shortcomings, there are a few positives. The fried tau kee, whether fried or soaked in the hotpot, was quite good. However, the overall food quality and service left much to be desired. For a better experience:

            • Seasoning: The skewers need proper seasoning to enhance their flavors.
            • Service: Improved communication about the time limits and better handling of customer service are crucial.
            • Food Freshness: Ensuring the freshness of ingredients, especially seafood, would greatly improve the dining experience.

            Conclusion

A.K Zai Lok Lok offers a buffet with potential but falls short in execution. The lack of seasoning, poor service, and mediocre food quality make it hard to recommend. While the friendly staff and variety of skewers are a plus, they don’t compensate for the overall experience. If you’re looking for a memorable Lok Lok feast, you might want to explore other options.

Our Editor's Review on Fat Po

              Positive Points

              First Impressions

Fat Po has quickly become a favorite dining spot for my family, offering a delightful fusion of East meets West. The cozy yet bustling atmosphere sets the stage for an enjoyable meal every time we visit. Though it can get crowded, especially around peak hours, we always manage to find a seat and are greeted with warm, friendly service.

              Must-Try Dishes

Every visit to Fat Po feels like a culinary adventure. Two of our must-order dishes are the Hokkien Vongole and the Beef Stir-Fried Hor Fun. Both dishes boast an incredible wok hei, delivering that charred, smoky flavor that is utterly delicious. The food typically arrives within 10 to 15 minutes of ordering, ensuring a prompt dining experience.

Another standout dish is the Laksa, which has earned rave reviews and rightfully so. It’s rich, flavorful, and simply delightful. The Sambal Fish is another favorite; its robust, spicy kick pairs perfectly with the tender fish. Even the Pork Chop does not disappoint, adding to the array of delicious options available.

              Fusion Delights

Fat Po excels at creating unique fusion dishes that marry the best of Eastern and Western culinary traditions. The Har Cheong Gai Burger and Basil Spaghetti are fantastic examples of this fusion done right. The Bolo Bun Hamburger, featuring a sweet bolo bun and grilled pork, is another highlight that showcases their innovative approach to food.

              Appetizers and Sides

We often start our meal with some delectable appetizers. The crispy Chicken Skin and Prawn Pancakes are particular favorites. The Otak Sliders, while decent, didn’t quite stand out as much. For a truly unique treat, the Mantou Chicken Sliders are a must-try; the mantou adds a lovely texture and flavor to the dish.

              Kid-Friendly Options

Fat Po is also great for families with children, offering a variety of kid-friendly meal options. My kids particularly enjoy the Garlic Enoki and the Har Cheong Gai Chicken Chop. The appeal of these dishes ensures that everyone, from adults to kids, leaves satisfied.

              Drinks and Ambiance

While the food takes center stage, Fat Po also offers a good selection of beverages. Bombay Gin at SGD 5 is a steal, and beer is a popular choice among patrons. The restaurant’s ambiance, though pleasant, could benefit from some enhancements given its secluded location.

              Fat Po

              Parking and Service

Parking can be a bit of a challenge during peak periods due to the limited space, but it's generally manageable during off-peak times. The service at Fat Po is consistently excellent, with staff who are fast, friendly, and professional.

              Conclusion

Fat Po delivers superb food quality with a delightful mix of flavors and cuisines. From the hearty Beef Stir-Fried Hor Fun to the inventive fusion dishes like the Har Cheong Gai Burger, each visit promises a memorable dining experience. While slightly on the pricey side, the generous portions and exceptional quality make it worth every penny. Whether you're looking for a place to enjoy with family or friends, Fat Po is highly recommended for its unique and delicious offerings.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

              First Impressions

I recently visited Fat Po for dinner with my family and left feeling quite disappointed. Although the restaurant was clean and the waitstaff friendly, the overall experience was far from satisfying.

              Ordering Process

The ordering process was straightforward, using a QR code to access the online menu and order platform. Our food arrived promptly, which was a plus. However, the problems began with the portions and quality of the food.

              Food Quality and Portions

The portions at Fat Po were notably small and insufficient, especially for my two growing boys. We ordered the pulled pork and ribeye burgers, which came with large sides of fries to compensate for the tiny burgers. I would have preferred a proper-sized burger over a plateful of fries.

The bacon spaghetti was another letdown. It arrived on a plate with a large rim, and the small serving of spaghetti in the center was stuck together, indicating it had been sitting out for a while. It was a struggle to eat, as the entire block of spaghetti lifted together when we tried to twirl it with a fork.

              Specific Dish Issues

I also ordered a smoked duck salad, which was a major disappointment. The salad contained only six tiny pieces of smoked duck, each no bigger than a 50 cent coin. This was a far cry from the menu picture, which showed large slices of smoked duck generously covering the salad. The bacon enoki set and lok mushroom were excessively salty and oily, with oil dripping from the bacon enoki as we ate.

              Service Experience

The service at Fat Po was subpar. Despite the restaurant being half full, the staff seemed uninterested in providing good service. Our request for less salty kids' pasta was met with a strange stare, and the staff failed to clear our table of empty plates, making it difficult to manage with a toddler. The staff appeared more interested in chit-chatting than attending to customers, and it took several attempts to get their attention.

              Ambiance and Pet Policy

We were also under the impression that Fat Po was still a pet-friendly restaurant, but it turned out that none of the stores in the container area allowed pets anymore. This was a disappointment, made worse by the rude behavior of the male staff members when we stood in the common area outside.

              Conclusion

Overall, Fat Po left much to be desired in terms of food quality, portion sizes, and service. The small portions, reheated food, and inattentive staff made for a less than enjoyable dining experience. While the restaurant's ambiance was decent, the lack of care in service and food preparation overshadowed any positives. I would not recommend dining here until significant improvements are made.

Located in a convenient area, the bistro's neon lights and inviting atmosphere immediately caught my attention. It's a great place to chill, eat, and drink, with the added bonus of a sound system that, while not perfectly tuned, adds to the lively ambiance.

                Combo Set B Experience

We opted for Combo Set B, priced at S$55, which includes 55 sticks of Lok Lok and a free bottle of Soju. The Soju paired wonderfully with the variety of Lok Lok items. The 55 sticks were randomly selected from a diverse range of options, including Cheese Tofu, Prawns, Bacon Enoki, Brinjal, Lady Fingers, Seaweed Chicken, Shisamo, Crab Sticks, and Drumsticks. This combo is perfect for parties and celebrations, offering a taste of everything.

                Favorite Flavors and Sauces

My favorite skewers were the MAMA Sibei 辣 and DIDI 酸酸甜甜辣辣, both extremely spicy but incredibly satisfying. The fried food was comforting, and the variety of skewers ensured there was something for everyone. The bistro serves three sauces that are a perfect match for the Lok Lok, especially the green Thai sauce and the red sambal. These sauces add a unique twist and enhance the overall flavor of the dishes.

                Dining and Drinking Experience

As a Penangite, I grew up eating Lok Lok, and Lok不Lok Bistro brought back fond memories of my favorite hawker food. The bistro offers a wide selection of skewers, such as Luncheon Meat, Seafood Tofu, Mantou, Broccoli Prawn, and more. Their homemade peanut and chili sauces, made from the owner's mother's secret recipe, are exceptional.

During our visit, we celebrated a friend's birthday, and the bistro delivered the fried Lok Lok, which paired perfectly with Soju. My personal favorites included the Mantou, Lady Fingers, Prawn, Otah, Fish Ball, and Foo Chok. At just $1 per stick, the Lok Lok is incredibly affordable and ideal for home parties.

                Drinks and Extras

The bistro offers a variety of drinks, though they are priced above market rate. We enjoyed Soju shots served in a wheel with lights, each shot accompanied by a piece of longan, which added a unique touch. The atmosphere, combined with the food and drinks, made it a memorable experience.

                Conclusion

Lok不Lok Bistro offers a delightful and affordable Lok Lok experience with a wide variety of skewers and delicious homemade sauces. Despite the higher drink prices and slightly off-tune sound system, the friendly environment and great food make it worth a visit. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a fun place to hang out with friends, Lok不Lok Bistro is an excellent choice. I’ll definitely be coming back for more of their tasty Lok Lok and lively ambiance.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

                First Impressions

Lok不Lok Bistro is a small, cozy place with just four tables, sharing premises with a bar opposite. This setup allows for both food and drinks to be served at either location, providing some flexibility. However, my overall experience here left much to be desired.

                Food Quality and Variety

The Lok Lok at Lok不Lok Bistro is all deep-fried. While the food is cheap, many of the vegetables were over-fried and burnt. This compromised the taste significantly, making it less enjoyable. Despite the low prices for food, the quality didn’t meet expectations.

                Drinks and Pricing

The drinks, in contrast, are quite pricey. The fairy wheel with shooters, priced at $1.50 per glass with a minimum order of 12, was particularly disappointing. The drinks were super diluted, tasting more like lychee syrup than anything else. This stark difference between the food and drink pricing was off-putting.

                Service Experience

Service at Lok不Lok Bistro was notably slow and forgetful. During our first round of orders, we weren’t given our drinks until almost all our food was finished. Additionally, the place was very noisy, with music blasting at full volume, making it difficult to have a conversation. The karaoke system was alright, but the queue was altered to favor regular customers, making it nearly impossible for newcomers to sing.

                Closing Time Issues

Our experience worsened as closing time approached. We were unaware that the bistro closed at 12 AM, and at 11:45 PM, a staff member rudely informed us that we wouldn’t be able to sing our selected songs. At midnight, another staff member rushed us to finish our beers immediately. When we asked for more time, she offered the options of finishing in five minutes or taking the drinks elsewhere, both in a very rude tone.

Despite our request for a little more time to finish, she started pouring the beer quickly, spilling some on my friend's phone. This rush to close up, without regard for customer service, left a very negative impression.

                Conclusion

While Lok不Lok Bistro offers cheap food and a flexible dining setup, the overall experience was marred by poor service, noisy ambiance, and subpar food quality. The expensive and diluted drinks further detracted from the experience. The staff's rudeness as closing time approached was particularly disappointing. Given these issues, I do not see myself returning to Lok不Lok Bistro and cannot recommend it to others looking for a pleasant dining experience.

Our Editor's Review on LokLok 1991’s by Daniel & Meng

                  Positive Points

                  First Impressions

Stumbling upon Loklok 1991’s by Daniel & Meng in Ang Mo Kio was an unexpected delight. This spot offers a wonderful Lok Lok experience that rivals and even surpasses those I’ve tried in KL. The place is open till 2 AM, making it an excellent choice for a late-night supper.

                  Pricing and Selection

The pricing here is very reasonable, with most skewers priced at $1 and some going up to $2.50. There’s a selection of about 30 different types of skewers. Although the variety isn’t vast, the quality makes up for it. The broccoli, for instance, is fried to a perfect crisp and literally melts in your mouth.

                  Cooking and Taste

The skewers are cooked quickly and topped with a delicious black sauce after frying. There are four additional sauces available, with the satay sauce being a standout. The food isn’t overcooked or burnt; instead, it’s nicely charred and crispy. The seasoning varies for different items, adding a unique touch to each skewer.

                  Portion Sizes

Each stick offers a decent portion size, with 3-4 bite-sized pieces. While the selection may seem small, the flavors are robust and satisfying. For a pair, you might need to order a bit more to feel full, but the overall experience is worth it.

                  Atmosphere and Service

Loklok 1991’s has a friendly and efficient staff. The service is fast, which is great for those late-night cravings. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a perfect place to unwind with friends over good food.

                  7b

                  Must-Try Items

One of my favorite skewers is the white button mushroom, which was surprisingly delicious. The homemade chili sauce is another highlight, pairing extremely well with the various skewers.

                  Conclusion

Loklok 1991’s by Daniel & Meng offers a fantastic Lok Lok experience with great flavors and reasonable prices. The quality of the food, the variety of sauces, and the friendly service make it a must-visit spot for anyone in the area. Whether you’re looking for a late-night snack or a place to enjoy with friends, this bistro is definitely worth a visit. I will certainly be returning and recommending it to my friends.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

                  First Impressions

My recent visit to Loklok 1991’s by Daniel & Meng left much to be desired. Despite the hype, my experience was far from enjoyable. Located in Ang Mo Kio, this place had potential but fell short in several areas.

                  Food Quality

The first thing that struck me was the poor quality of the oil used for frying. The skewers tasted as if they had been cooked in old, stale oil, which significantly affected the flavor. The food itself was mostly burned and had a bitter taste, making it almost inedible. This was a major disappointment, especially considering the generally positive reviews I had seen.

                  Portion Size and Pricing

While the pricing is reasonable, with most items priced at $1 per stick, the portion sizes were disappointing. The skewers were small, and the overall value did not match my expectations. For a delivery order, the food arrived cold and salty, which further detracted from the experience.

                  Waiting Time

The wait time was another major issue. I experienced a one-hour queue followed by an additional hour for the food to be prepared. Even after the long wait, the food arrived cold, which was puzzling given the short distance between the counter and our table. This inefficiency in service added to my frustration.

                  Variety and Sauces

While Loklok 1991’s offers a decent variety of skewers and sauces, the execution fell flat. The skewers, all deep-fried, started to taste the same after the first few. They either had a salt pepper mix or a soy sauce-based marinade, which did not provide enough distinction between items. The special chili sauce did have a good kick, but it wasn’t enough to redeem the overall taste.

                  Overall Experience

My overall experience at Loklok 1991’s was quite disappointing. The preparation of the Lok Lok itself was subpar, with most fried items lacking the necessary crispiness. For anyone who has tried authentic Lok Lok in Malaysia or Thailand, this rendition would likely fall short of expectations.

                  Conclusion

Despite reasonable pricing and a variety of options, Loklok 1991’s by Daniel & Meng failed to deliver on quality and taste. The poor food preparation, long wait times, and mediocre flavors made it an experience I wouldn’t want to repeat. I hope they can improve these aspects to meet the expectations set by their reputation. For now, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a satisfying Lok Lok experience.

Our Editor's Review on Fei Zhu Lok Lok

                    Positive Points

I recently got my hands on the Yale YMF40A RL, a roller mortise lock, and I must say, it's packed with features. From fingerprint access to PIN codes, mechanical keys, and even an optional Bluetooth feature, this lock has it all. However, if you're looking to use remote access via the Yale Home APP, you'll need the Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, which is sold separately.

What I truly appreciate about the Yale YMF40A RL is its compatibility with the Yale Home Bridge, allowing me to unlock my door from virtually anywhere.

                    First Impressions

My recent experience at Fei Zhu Lok Lok was truly delightful. Located in a cozy spot, this place offers some of the best Lok Lok I've had in Singapore. The staff were friendly, and their signature chili sauce was indeed “SHIOK,” living up to its name.

                    Food Quality and Variety

I’ve been a frequent customer, and Fei Zhu Lok Lok consistently delivers on taste and quality. The food is super affordable and, in many cases, even better than some of the Lok Lok I’ve tried in Malaysia. The Lala soup is a standout, bursting with flavor and always a crowd favorite among my friends and me.

                    Service and Staff

Despite my general indifference to fried Lok Lok, I found Fei Zhu’s offerings quite satisfying. My family loved the food, particularly the clams, which were clean and fresh without a trace of sand, though the bowl was slightly small. The price point is excellent, and the only downside is that often only one staff member is handling all the tasks. I hope the owner considers hiring additional staff to improve efficiency and allow for more frequent replenishment of food and sauces.

                    Midnight Cravings

My first late-night visit with friends was on a Saturday, and I found the food decent and enjoyable. However, a wider variety of options would enhance the experience. The prices were fair, though I felt the bacon enoki sticks were slightly overpriced given their small size. As for service, it’s what you’d expect from a coffeeshop setting—basic but satisfactory. A small suggestion would be to provide tongs for the potatoes in the water box for better hygiene.

                    Customer Service

I was particularly impressed by the dedication of the staff, especially Phyllis, who went out of her way to help me place an order when I had trouble with the Grab app. Her quick and efficient assistance made the experience even better. The service is consistently friendly, and the owner often handles delivery orders personally, ensuring they arrive promptly and still warm.

                    8b

                    Delivery Experience

Fei Zhu Lok Lok’s delivery service is top-notch. I was pleasantly surprised to receive my order within an hour. The food arrived hot and the sauces were generously provided. The addition of a second outlet in the west, along with their reliable delivery service, means no more long queues, which is a huge plus.

                    Conclusion

Fei Zhu Lok Lok offers an exceptional Lok Lok experience with tasty food, friendly service, and excellent value for money. The dedication of the staff and the quality of the food make it a standout choice for Lok Lok lovers in Singapore. Whether dining in or ordering for delivery, Fei Zhu Lok Lok never disappoints. I highly recommend giving it a try, especially for those late-night cravings.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

                    First Impressions

I recently visited Fei Zhu Lok Lok with my family after seeing some positive reviews on YouTube and passing by the place multiple times. It was our first time trying Lok Lok, so we were unfamiliar with the process. Unfortunately, our initial experience was not as pleasant as we had hoped.

                    Service Experience

We were particularly interested in trying the Golden Mantou, but were confused about its availability and variety. When we approached the counter to ask for clarification, the staff member was rude and reluctant in his response. This unwelcoming attitude left a bad impression right from the start.

                    Food Quality

The food quality was another major letdown. The skewers were not fully fried, leaving some parts soft and unappetizing. The chicken, in particular, tasted off and did not seem fresh. The food was extremely oily, and the presentation was poor, with the tray itself looking greasy and dirty. We ordered nine sticks but couldn't finish them due to the poor taste and quality.

                    Cleanliness

Cleanliness was a significant issue during our visit. The fridge where the skewers were stored appeared dirty, which was concerning. This lack of hygiene was a stark contrast to the appealing images we had seen online, leading to a very disappointing dining experience.

                    Pricing Misleading

One of the most misleading aspects of Fei Zhu Lok Lok was the pricing. While the signboard advertised “$1 per stick,” nearly all items required a minimum of two sticks, effectively doubling the price. This misleading information can easily disappoint and frustrate new customers expecting more affordable options.

                    Conclusion

Overall, my experience at Fei Zhu Lok Lok was highly disappointing. The rude service, poor food quality, and lack of cleanliness make it hard to understand the positive reviews this place has received. If you are looking for a pleasant Lok Lok experience, I would recommend looking elsewhere. Fei Zhu Lok Lok needs significant improvements in both service and food quality before it can be considered a worthwhile dining option.

                      Positive Points

                      First Impressions

My first experience with Lok Lok in Singapore was at Happy Lok Lok, and it was fantastic! The food tasted fresh and delicious, especially after being deep-fried. The outlet itself is clean and hygienic, offering a wide variety of both meat and non-meat options. The spacious setting makes it a great place to relax, especially after some exercise at the nearby park.

                      Food Quality and Variety

The selection at Happy Lok Lok is impressive, with a good range of options to satisfy any craving. The food is always fresh and replenished regularly, which ensures that everything tastes great. The deep-frying process is done with care, as the oil doesn't have the unpleasant “smelly” or burnt taste, indicating it is changed regularly. My partner and I particularly enjoyed the Taiwan sausage and crab meat – both are must-tries!

                      Service and Atmosphere

The staff at Happy Lok Lok are super friendly and efficient, ensuring that everything is cooked quickly. The atmosphere is lively, especially between 11 PM and midnight, with good music and a clean environment. It's a highly recommended spot for anyone looking to enjoy some late-night snacks.

                      Location and Convenience

Situated beside Hai Bin Prawning, Happy Lok Lok is a nice place to chill with some Lok Lok and beers. The constant flow of diners and grab orders keeps the food fresh and replenished. It's also conveniently located for those in the area, making it easy to visit repeatedly without having to travel far.

                      Family-Friendly

Living nearby, we've made Happy Lok Lok a regular spot. The taste is quite similar to the Lok Lok stalls in JB, which is a pleasant surprise. The spicy and punchy chili adds an extra kick to the food. The reasonable pricing and substantial portions make it a great value for money. The friendly lady staff at the counter made my visit even more enjoyable, and my daughter loved snacking on the bottled Aiyu jelly. We’ll definitely be back to try more items.

                      Conclusion

Happy Lok Lok is a cozy and inviting place to enjoy a wide variety of fried snacks, especially late at night. With its fresh food, friendly staff, and lively atmosphere, it’s a solid choice for satisfying those Lok Lok cravings. While it might be slightly more expensive and requires a car to get there, the quality and experience make it well worth the visit. Highly recommended for anyone looking to try Lok Lok in Singapore.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

                      First Impressions

My initial visit to Happy Lok Lok was promising. Located in Punggol, it was one of the few places offering Lok Lok late into the night. The place was bustling with people, and the variety of sauce selections added to the appeal. The food was fresh and tasty, making it a memorable experience.

                      Subsequent Visits

However, my second visit was quite disappointing. The food seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. The skewers were dark and oily, clearly fried in old oil. This stark contrast from my first visit was disheartening, especially considering the once bustling place was now almost empty with only two tables occupied.

                      Food Quality and Pricing

On both visits, I found the prices to be quite high, considering the quality of the food. Initially, the variety of sauces was a highlight, but the actual seasoning on the Lok Lok was minimal, with the same glaze used on every stick. On my second visit, the food was excessively oily and salty, with a burnt taste. It felt like eating cotton balls soaked in old oil. The food was so greasy that I had to use a paper towel to absorb some of the oil to make it slightly edible.

                      Sauce and Seasoning

While the initial variety of sauces was nice, the portion provided was inadequate. Despite spending $50 on food, only a small plate of sauce was given, which was insufficient. Some skewers were pre-glazed with a sweet yakitori-like sauce, making all the skewers taste sweet, which was not particularly appealing.

                      Atmosphere and Service

The restaurant itself was clean, and the staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring tables were cleaned promptly after each guest. Despite the cleanliness and good service, the deteriorating food quality and high prices overshadowed these positives.

                      Conclusion

Happy Lok Lok started off strong but failed to maintain its quality. The initial appeal of late-night Lok Lok with a variety of sauces was marred by the subsequent experience of oily, burnt food and high prices. While the staff are friendly and the place is clean, these factors do not make up for the poor food quality. I would not recommend visiting this place, especially late at night when the oil seems not to be fresh. My first visit was enjoyable, but unfortunately, it was my last.

                        Positive Points

                        First Impressions

After hearing my wife rave about Lok Lok Dynasty, I decided to give it a try. Situated in the Compassvale neighborhood near the Ranggung LRT station, this spot is one of the few Lok Lok eateries in the Sengkang area. The friendly staff and neat layout made a positive first impression.

                        Food Quality and Pricing

The prices are clearly indicated on the sticks, with a range from $1.20 to $2.20, making it easy to pick and choose your favorites. The food was well-cooked and crispy, satisfying my late-night cravings. With over 50 varieties and six different sauces, including mentaiko and satay peanut sauce, there’s plenty to enjoy. My personal favorite was the crispy deep-fried broccoli.

                        Ordering and Service

The ordering process was smooth. After selecting our skewers, we received a buzzer to notify us when the food was ready, which generally took about 10 minutes. There was no queue, and the food was cooked quickly and efficiently. The staff, especially the lady boss, provided excellent service, ensuring everything was fresh and delicious.

                        Atmosphere and Ambiance

Lok Lok Dynasty offers a cozy atmosphere, perfect for chilling with drinks and catching up with friends. They stay open until late, making it an ideal spot for late-night snacking. The diverse selection of homemade sauces, including satay, Thai chili, sweet and sour, mayo, and mentaiko mayo, adds an extra layer of flavor to the skewers.

                        Notable Skewers

During our visit, several skewers stood out for their taste and uniqueness:

                        • Mini Shrimp Burger Mantou
                        • Shishamo Fish
                        • Takoyaki Octopus Ball

                        Conclusion

Lok Lok Dynasty is a hidden gem in the Compassvale neighborhood, offering a great variety of delicious and reasonably priced skewers. The friendly service, cozy atmosphere, and late-night hours make it a perfect spot for satisfying your Lok Lok cravings. While it may not be as good as some of the JB stalls, it’s a solid choice for the neighborhood. I highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you’re in the area.

What Could be Improved (Reviews from Real Customers from Google Reviews [Paraphrased]):

Note and disclaimer: The following negative reviews are not from our own opinion, but gathered from the negative reviews on Google reviews.

                        First Impressions

I recently visited Lok Lok Dynasty located in a coffee shop, and decided to give it a try spontaneously. The initial impression was mixed, largely due to the food quality and environment.

                        Food Quality

Unfortunately, the food was over-fried, and it was evident that the oil had been overused. This was particularly noticeable with the seaweed chicken, where the seaweed had come off due to excessive frying. The taste was average at best, with standard sauces that didn’t stand out. While it’s not the best Lok Lok I’ve had, especially compared to some JB stalls, it’s a decent option in the neighborhood.

                        Pricing and Service

The pricing is clearly indicated on each stick, which is convenient. However, I found the prices a bit high considering the quality. The service was efficient, but the food didn’t quite meet my expectations. The rice, in particular, was very dry and could have used more sauce.

                        Ambiance and Environment

One major drawback was the ambiance. Despite being in a non-smoking zone, people smoked openly, making it uncomfortable for non-smokers to find a suitable table. This issue needs to be addressed to create a more pleasant dining environment.

                        Operation Hours

One positive aspect is the operation hours. Lok Lok Dynasty stays open late, making it a convenient option for late-night cravings. This is a significant advantage, especially in the Punggol area where late-night food options can be limited.

                        Conclusion

Lok Lok Dynasty has potential, but there are several areas that need improvement. The food quality, particularly the frying technique, needs attention, and the smoking issue in the non-smoking zone should be addressed. While it’s not the best Lok Lok I’ve had, it’s a decent option for late-night dining in the neighborhood. With some improvements, this place could become a more attractive spot for Lok Lok enthusiasts.

                        • Gourmet Skewers: High-end ingredients like wagyu beef, scallops, and truffle-infused mushrooms have made their way into Lok Lok menus, offering a luxurious twist on the traditional fare.
                        • Vegetarian and Vegan Options: To cater to health-conscious and vegetarian diners, many stalls now offer plant-based skewers made from tofu, tempeh, and a variety of vegetables.
                        • Fusion Flavors: Innovative stalls experiment with fusion flavors, combining elements from different cuisines to create unique and exciting taste experiences. For example, you might find skewers marinated in Korean BBQ sauce or dipped in Japanese miso broth.

Lok Lok is a popular street food in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia and Singapore, where diners cook their own skewers of food at the table. These skewers, which can include a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables, and specialty items, are either boiled in a flavorful broth or deep-fried. Lok Lok is typically enjoyed with an assortment of dipping sauces that enhance the flavors of the skewers.

                        Where did Lok Lok originate?

Lok Lok originated in Malaysia, where it became a staple in bustling night markets and street food stalls. Boiling Broth: Skewers are dipped into a pot of simmering broth, which can be plain or flavored with ingredients like Tom Yum, Laksa, or herbal chicken. The broth cooks the food and imparts its flavors to the skewers.
Deep-Frying: Some skewers are deep-fried to achieve a crispy exterior. This method is commonly used for items like prawn fritters, fish cakes, and other battered ingredients.
