Then there are the savoury pies to consider. With its creamy sauce, soft vegetables, moist chicken, and those delicious tiny peas straight from the garden, this is a comforting chicken pot pie. Other meats can be used in more exotic pies. You can prepare Sheppard's pie, which has no crust but does feature mashed potatoes as a topping. Layers of onions, carrots, turnips, and potatoes are layered in a flavorful chicken sauce in a vegetable pie.

The pie is delicious. There are no restrictions when it comes to pie. You can put whatever you want in a pie.

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Cottage Pies Cafe: Traditional Chicken and Beef Pies in Singapore

Since 1997, Cottage Pies Cafe has been serving up delicious savoury country-style pies. Despite operating for more than two decades now, their quality has never deteriorated one bit and at a mass-consumer price! Chicken with carrots, maize, peas, curry chicken, beef stew, and black pepper steak are just a few of the traditional pies available. Vegetarian pie aficionados will enjoy their tasty macaroni and potato pie.

The crust of the bite-sized Chicken Pie was buttery, crispy and flaky. Inside, the shredded chicken was delightfully juicy and soft. Chicken pie filling is really substantial.

Meat lovers can opt for its Beef Stew Pie, a hearty and meaty pie that’s stuffed with stewed beef, soft potato cubes and corn. The Chicken Potato Pie consists of creamy mashed potato, chicken bites, and small cubes of carrot and peas. The pie together with the filling itself is well-balanced with a hint of pepper taste.

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Don Pie: Buttery Pastry, and Generous Chicken FIlled Pies was a Total Hit with Our Palate!

When it comes to savoury pies, Don Pie is a household name. It's been around since 2000, and it's known for its simple yet delicious pies, which are prepared fresh every day using all-natural ingredients.

They offer pies such as the Signature Chicken Pie, Black Pepper Chicken Pie, Curry Chicken Pie, and others.

The Signature Chicken is made with freshly ground chicken, peas, carrots, potatoes, egg, and white pepper, and is perfect for individuals who prefer a lighter taste. Unlike some other pies, where the chicken arrives in large bits that are difficult to eat, the chicken utilised in this one was soft and supple. The crust is light, flaky, and crispy at the same time.

The Black Pepper Pie, on the other hand, has a more complex flavour profile and a stronger pepper fragrance than its black pepper counterpart.

The Curry Pie, which is made out of a flavorful curry gravy that has been reduced to almost nothing, diced potato, little bits of onion, and a small portion of a hard-boiled egg, has a variety of textures that are perfectly offset by a spicy curry flavour. Together with the flaky consistency and buttery flavour of the pastry, the Curry Pie is definitely a must-try.

You'll also be pleased to learn that, despite being five times the price of margarine, 100% butter is utilised in all of their pies since the owner believes in serving pies devoid of trans fats. This alone is a compelling reason to admire Don Pie!

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Dona Manis Pies: Traditional Pie Bakery At Katong Shopping Centre

Dona Manis Cake Shop is the place to go if you're wanting old-school pies. The bakery had a homey feel to it and had been creating their famous banana pie for over 30 years. People of all ages flock to buy their baked goodies!

The Banana Pie is packed with wonderful sweet aromatic banana combined with coconut shreds and covered with a buttery crust adorned with toasted almond crumbs in each bite. The touch of sweetness from the banana combined nicely with the shredded coconut and crispy crust biscuit to create a lovely flavour that lingered in your memory. This dessert is indulgent but not so rich that you won't be able to finish a slice.

The buttery base crust of the Peach Pie is layered with yam paste and topped with plenty of peaches and pineapples. The yam's smooth and creamy texture sandwiched between the crust and the fruity topping creates a flawless piece of delicacy that was rich in flavour and fragrance.

Dona Manis Cake Shop sells Banana Pies, Peach Pies, Cream Puffs, and Chocolate Tarts, which are quite popular with their clients.

Dona Manis is a rare find. You won't find identical pastries, nor will you receive the same taste, at any other bakery.

Our Food Editor's Verdict of DP Creations Pies: Wow! A Must-Try Savoury Pie Shop in SG!

The smell of freshly baked pastries baking in the oven at DP Creations Patisserie will urge you to investigate more. It's an unobtrusive bakery that you might overlook when passing by. Chef Pellanie and Mr Daniel, a married couple, opened this bakery in 2018 and have been dishing up savoury chicken pies and authentic Australian beef pies ever since.

Every pie they prepare is made with a lot of heart and passion! For example, instead of peanut oil, they use olive oil, and each pie is weighed to guarantee that the filling is at least a particular weight.

Carrots, peas, potatoes, and bits of chicken abound in the Chicken Pie. The inside was unexpectedly creamy, despite the crusty exterior. The bakers didn't cut corners when it came to making each pie. Despite the fact that the chicken pie was a touch on the costly side, it was still worth it because it was so filling.

The Beef Pie has a little thicker crust than other pies, but it is still soft and crumbly with a faint crunch. The beef chunks were well-coated in a delicious mixture with a rich sauce made with beef fat. The sauce's unique flavour had a hint of sourness to it, which was emphasised by the pleasant aroma.

The key ingredients in the Vegetable Pie are butter cream, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. Don't be fooled by the pie's ingredients; the final product was wonderful! The cream was light and had a cauliflower flavour, despite being creamy. You'll be able to appreciate their crunchiness in addition to their natural sweetness thanks to the combination of vegetables. There is a pre-order option for a 100 per cent Vegetarian Pie that has no butter or eggs for vegans.

In addition to savoury pies, DP Creations now offers Egg Tarts to fulfil your sweet tooth. This bakery's egg tarts are generously portioned and not overly sweet, making them an excellent breakfast or dessert option. The custard-like custard filling went wonderfully with the buttery, crunchy crust.

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Elijah Pies: A Work of Art. As Beautiful on the Palate As it Was On The Eyes.

The shop began as a small stand in NTU, but it has now evolved into a simple bakery that delivers excellent, unique flavours and beautiful pies.

Nutella Pie is an all-time favourite, combining rich dark chocolate with roasted hazelnuts for a delicious dessert. Every piece of this pie is a mouthful of rich dark chocolate and roasted hazelnuts.

The lively Wild Berry Lavender Pie has a silky smooth creamy texture with a bright floral fruity sweet flavour thanks to a combination of lavender flowers cream, blueberry mousse, and fresh plain yoghurt.

The Earl Grey Rose Pie is a thing of beauty in and of itself, with little cream roses piped into a delicate shortcrust shell that's robust but flaky. The earl grey mousse is rich but silky smooth consistency.

A blend of yuzu zest and Swiss buttercream meringue gives the Yuzu Meringue Pie a creamy fluffy pillow-soft texture with faint lemony notes on the tongue.

The Matcha Avocado Pie has a rich, velvety texture and a vegetal earthy grassy sweet flavour thanks to a combination of matcha / green tea powder and avocado mousse.

The Pandan Coconut Pie is a crowd-pleaser for both the young and elderly. This pandan-infused coconut cream pie, dusted with toasted coconut and coated with gula Melaka, will transport you to Malaysia.

All of Elijah Pies' pies are made from scratch, utilising only the freshest seasonal produce. Priority online ordering is essential because the couple (owner and wife team) runs the business on their own, and they frequently run out of goods.

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Kemono's pies: Unique Japanese Pies in Singapore – Ultimate Pie Perfection!

Kemono, a Japanese takeaway kiosk and meal delivery service, is most known for its guilt-free Japanese roasted chicken, but they also serve delicious hot pies.

The classic baked Chicken Mushroom Pie has a buttery sweet savoury crust and a large filling of chopped boneless chicken chunks with shiitake mushrooms and cream. The ingredients are extremely juicy and tender. The creamy sauce brought out the natural sweetness of the chicken chunks and the earthiness of the mushrooms in this pie.

The Tokyo Style Triple Cheese Beef Pie is a flaky crust with a buttery sweet savoury flavour with a large filling of diced beef chunks, potatoes, and three slices of American cheese. The components are soft and juicy, with a deep meaty cheesy salty savoury starchy flavour that is boldly punchy on the palate thanks to the layered notes from the cheese.

The Hokkaido Truffle Prawn and Scallop Pie is a must-try for seafood enthusiasts. The sumptuous pairing of prawns, scallops, and truffle oil is made in heaven. The truffle aroma lingered after each bite, enhancing the seafood's inherent flavours.

Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu Pie, Okinawa Stewed Duck Pie, and Lim Chee Guan Bak Kwa Pastry Pie are among the other delectable flavours. Cream Spinach Vegetable Pie is available for vegetarians.

Kemono's online meal delivery service is available until 10 p.m., making them an excellent solution for late-night pie cravings!

Our Food Editor's Verdict of Simply Good pies: Health Freaks Alert! Free Range Hormone-Free Beef with Rich Quality Fillings. Oh and the Guinness Pie with Ribeye!

Simply Good Pies offers a wide variety of pies, and we mean it when we say they are very serious about their pies! Their handmade pies are produced using hormone-free, free-range beef, wild seafood, and organic vegetables. There are no preservatives or additives, either.

Simply Good pies are well known for the English Pork Pies and we rank them as one of the best in Singapore. Their English Pork Pie recipe holds true to the original Melton Mowbray pie-making recipe.

Very few pie makers in Singapore put their heart and soul into honest, authentic and fresh produce, but we can say that Simply Good Pies stand out in this aspect. Their meats are from grass-fed cattle in New Zealand, their fish is sourced from Alaskan oceans, and they use artisanal cheeses from well-known dairy farms in the UK. The result is consistently stunning savoury pies made from the finest ingredients. Their stocks and gelatine are made from scratch on their own in-house.

The Beef & Guinness pie is filled with succulent chunks of juicy prime ribeye steak swimming in a deep dark sauce with a generous fill of Guinness. This is perfect for a warm, soulful meal and at $10.50 for a 220gram portion, we say it's so worth it.

A classic favourite is the Aussie Meat Pie using top-quality Australian beef. You can taste the difference in their beef pie, the minced beef remains tender, dancing with the caramelised onions in a rich brown gravy. Oh and don't forget it's encased in an all-butter fluffy flaky pastry.

The New Zealand Lamb Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb from the green pastures of New Zealand. No-nonsense grass-fed lamb that is slow cooked with organic vegetables and topped with a melody of cheeses and mashed potato that is rich and decadent. The result is a very fulfilling pie, your palette will be so satisfied with each honest ingredient of their Shepherds pie, cooked to perfection.

The 375-gram English Pork Pie is a no-brainer for porky pig lovers. Pork and smokey bacon, set in an in-house made pork jelly and encrusted with traditional lard pastry, made the old-fashioned honest way. Their recipe holds true to the authentic Melton Mowbray pork pie. This is a whole lotta porkiness.

Pescatarians and seafood lovers will enjoy the Awesome Fish Pie at $19 for a 2 person serving. Tender, flaky chunks of wild Alaskan salmon, mixed gently with generously sized prawns and squid, sit in a creamy white seafood sauce and are topped with their signature cheesy mashed potato. We would order this along with a meat pie, we think it would balance out a meal very nicely.

If you're into organs (not the instrument), try their Steak and Kidney pie. Slow-cooked succulent beef in a rich beer gravy with sweet lamb kidneys makes this a hearty, soulful meal for any occasion. Simply Good Pies have other cool pies that you may like, and something else that caught our eye was their chicken collagen and beef bone broth. Worth mentioning is that their beef bone broth is sold unsalted with no MSG, the bones are browned and roasted, and then slow cooked for 14 hours to extract the most collagen and nutrients from the bones and cartilages. 500ml bone broth vaccum sealed pouches that you can store in the freezer will uplift any beefy or savoury recipe whenever you need them, extremely handy we say!

Our Food Editor's Verdict of The Shepherd's Pie: Best Shepherd's pie in SG Hands Down. Need we say more?

The Shepherd's Pie, a halal-certified pie speciality shop, is an excellent place to go for a traditional shepherd's pie at a reasonable price. Shepherd's pies are available all year, so they can be eaten at any time and for any occasion. Only the best ingredients are utilised in this dish.

The Shepherd's Pie is distinguished by its cooking process and crispy yet soft creamy mashed potato toppings. Each pie is topped with a gravy that was created specifically to complement these flavours.

On top of their Classic Beef Shepherd's Pie is a layer of creamy, warm, and soft potatoes. The beef, onions, and carrots are flavorful on the inside.

The Traditional Chicken Shepherd's Pie is very delicious. The mashed potatoes' toppings were also consistent, with a crunchy shell that worked well with the rest of the pie.

While a vegetarian shepherd's pie may seem unusual, you will be pleasantly delighted. Their Veggie Lovers shepherd's pie is delicate and flavorful, with diverse veggies (carrots, peas, cauliflower, tomatoes, mushrooms) in a wonderful sauce topped with mashed potatoes and cheese.

Black Pepper Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, Black Pepper Beef, Rendang Beef, or Lamb Special are some of the other delectable flavours. Our Food Editor's Verdict of Windowsills Pies: Beautiful Classical Pie Creations with Playfulness and Excitement For the Eyes and A Perfect High Tea.

You'll find a delectable assortment of classic and unique pies at Windowsill Pies, a homegrown pie speciality bakeshop. Each item is prepared by hand with their signature dough.

The best hand-picked Morello cherries are used to make their famous Morello Cherry Pie, which is topped with an exquisite sugared shortcrust Lattice weave. This pie has a multi-dimensional flavour thanks to the acidity and brightness of the sour cherries, as well as a trace of almond. The pastry shell remained crisp and flaky despite the moistness of the filling.

Other popular flavours at Windowsill Pies include Strawberry Lemon, Banana Almond Brittle Cognac, and S'mores.

The S'mores pie is smooth and chocolaty without being overly rich, with two fluffy toasted marshmallows and homemade graham crackers on top and substantial milk chocolate pudding and dark chocolate fudge with marshmallows inside. The flaky pie crust held everything together while also providing great tactile contrast.

Their Banana Almond Brittle Pie is filled with fresh sweet bananas, salty caramel and crunchy nuts for a mixture of flavours and texture.

Common Questions & FAQs – We Answer Your Top Questions about All-Things Pies

At its broadest, a pie is any dish enclosed in a pastry crust, typically baked in a shallow, round pan called a pie dish. Pies are usually made with sweet fillings, like fruit or custard, but they can also be savoury, like a chicken pot pie.

What are the different types of Pie?

Pies come in many varieties, both sweet and savoury.

                        ● Open-face pies only have a bottom crust and are typically sweet. Open-face pies are known as tarts in England and France.

                        ● Double-crust pies have a bottom crust and a top crust.

                        ● Lattice pies have a bottom crust and decorative top crust made with strips of dough.

                        ● Deep-dish pies do not have a bottom crust—just a single crust on the top. They’re often called pot pies when made with savoury fillings.

                        ● Hand pies are pastry pockets baked on a baking sheet rather than in a pie dish.

                        ● No-bake pies are made with pressed crumb crusts of pulverized graham crackers or cookies bound together with melted butter. They’re typically filled with refrigerated or frozen creams and custards.

What are the different types of Pie Fillings?

There is an almost infinite number of pie fillings and styles, but some of the most popular pie fillings include

                        ● Fruit: Fruit pies such as apple pie, peach pie, and mixed berry pie are best served either hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or cold for breakfast the next morning. Try making fruit pie with a flaky phyllo dough crust.

                        ● Nuts: Pecan pie sweetened with brown sugar is a North American favourite inspired by English walnut pie.

                        ● Custard: Custard pies are filled with egg custard that bakes with the pie crust. Classic pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie can both be made as custard pies.

                        ● Cream: Cream pies include peanut butter pie, coconut cream pie, banana cream pie, and chocolate cream pie, as well as citrus curd pies like key lime pie and lemon meringue pie.

                        ● Savoury: Savoury pies are pies that contain cooked meat, poultry, seafood, or vegetables in a thick sauce. Examples: Pot pies, Quiche, and Sheppard pie.

How long can you keep your pies without refrigeration?

‍Freshly baked pies last up to 2 hours without refrigeration in a closed package. The duration may vary according to the environment temperature. For freshness and the best texture, all pies are to be consumed within the day. With refrigeration, fresh-baked pies stay good for up to 3 days if stored airtight in the chiller/freezer. Just remember to leave it out to defrost for about 15 minutes before reheating.

How can I pair pies with my main course meal?

Here are some simple guidelines to help you choose which pies go best with what you’re serving:

                        ● Red Meats, Hearty Soups and Stews – Fruit pies (cherry, apple, peach, strawberry-rhubarb).

                        ● Pork and Poultry – Berry and fruit puree pies (blueberry, blackberry, pumpkin, sweet potato).

                        ● Fish and Seafood – Custard or cream pies (lemon meringue, key lime, banana cream, coconut cream).

                        ● Pasta and Risotto – Chocolate pies (chocolate silk, mocha mousse, peanut butter chocolate).

                        ● Creamy Dishes and Vegetables – Sugar or nut pies (brown sugar, maple, pecan, butter tart, raisin).

                        ● Lighter fare – Crustless pies (crustless pumpkin, crustless custard)

Pie, in any form, checks all of the boxes for good comfort food. It's got the right amount of fat, sugar, and salt (depending on a predilection for savoury or sweet comfort).

Eating pie is a bit like playing a choose-your-own-adventure game, where you have to choose whether you want a pastry-heavy pie or one with a filling-heavy pie with each mouthful. As a result, each bite feels like a mini-dinner party in your mouth.

Perhaps the most enduring satisfaction in a pie comes from the baker's heart rather than the pie itself.
